Mary Blair's World of Color - A Centennial Tribute

The ACADEMY of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is hosting The 17th Marc Davis Celebration of Animation, which is honoring Mary Blair on October 20th.  

A panel discussion, moderated by animation critic and historian Charles Solomon will not only celebrate Blair's work as an artist and stylist, but will also show examples and discuss how her work has influenced their own.  Scheduled panelists include: Pixar director Pete Docter, Disney animator Eric Goldberg, art director Susan Goldberg, Pixar color key artist Daisuke “Dice” Tsutsumi and character designer Michael Giaimo.

Royaltie$ Magazine's September 15th edition features an article about Disney Consumer Products on-going plans to turn It's a Small World into a global brand.

 

"We decided to use the artwork of Mary Blair as our inspiration for a product line,” says Robert Oberschelp, Director, Disney Collections.  It’s a Small World will be created as a franchise but we wanted to launch it as a children’s brand first.

Rex Ray has lent his signature bold and colorful designs to wallpaper.  Flavor Paper launched the Rex Ray Studio collection at the ICFF Show.  

Flavor Paper produces unique vintage, contemporary and custom handscreened wallcoverings that will add a burst of flavor to any environment.

DODOcase announced the launch of the Rex Ray DODOcase featuring a signature and exclusive Rex Ray design.

 

This specialty case marks the first collaboration for DODOcase, and the manifestation of a longstanding desire to work with artists while continuing to grow support of local businesses.  Rex Ray was a natural choice for the first DOODcase artist collaboration, both because of his distinctive and dynamic designs, as well as his standing as a notable and important contributor within the local San Francisco community.  

Every DODOcase has its own unique character as each case is handmade by local artisans in San Francisco using bookbinding techniques developed hundreds of years ago.  The Rex Ray DODOcase is available for $89.95.

A Short Documentary about the art of Jim Flora

 
James “Jim” Flora (January 25, 1914 – July 9, 1998), best known for his distinctive and idiosyncratic album cover art for RCA Victor and Columbia Records during the 1940s and 1950s, was also a prolific commercial illustrator from the 1940s to the 1970s and the author/illustrator of 17 popular children’s books.  

Less well-known is that he was a fine artist with a diabolical bent, who created hundreds of paintings, drawings, etchings and sketches over his 84-year lifespan.

The Disney Gallery will unveil a brand new exhibit May 13th to celebrate the art of Mary Blair and 45 years of this classic Disney attraction.

New Jim Flora Limited Edition Print: Bell Island at Night

 

Jim Flora Art has released a new limited edition (30) fine art print entitled BELL ISLAND AT NIGHT.  The original work, a tempera on board, dates from 1968. Bell Island, part of Rowayton CT, is a quaint enclave on Long Island Sound where Flora and his family lived from the mid-1940s until the artist's death in 1998.

Walt Disney asked Mary Blair to design It's a Small World for the New York World's Fair (1964-65). Blair was known for her modern artistic style and inspired use of color. In 1966, the highly successful attraction debuted at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

Rex Ray and the Strand Hotel in New York City recently unveiled a stunning new commission.  The Strand's main dining room features Ray's 6 x 28 foot masterpiece entitled Hemaspora.

The hotel is a chic, luxury hotel in Manhattan's Midtown Fashion District by hotelier Tom Glassie.

DZINE has teamed up with Gallery 16 to showcase the artwork of Rex Ray. 

DZINE's white washed walls, high ceilings, and contemporary interior make for the perfect backdrop for Rex Ray's dynamic and vibrant pieces. All of the works on display are from Rex's collection of mixed media collages on linen.

Mary Blair's whimsical  and charming mid-century artwork were recently featured on One Kings Lane.  The artwork, some of which had previously not been seen by the public, were offered as framed, high-quality giclée prints.

REX RAY STUDIO LAUNCHES SILK SCARF LINE

REX RAY Studio has created a fun sophisticated collection of fabulous silk scarves inspired by the bold color palatte and textures of his artwork.  Launched in January 2011 there are 35 designs,  hand made in fine silk twill.  

This fabulous collection is represented by Karen Alweil Studio. 

MARY BLAIR AT NORDSTROM

Disney Consumer Products and Nordstrom announced a collection of It’s a Small World themed children's apparel, accessories and footwear based on the original concept art of Disney Legend Mary Blair. The collection celebrates the 45th anniversary of the It's a Small World attraction at Disneyland.

   

Comprised of four season-themed lines, the apparel for newborns, infants and toddlers will hit Nordstrom stores throughout the year. The lines include Japanese Spring, which launches February 28; Indian Summer, scheduled for June; Scottish Fall, which rolls out in September; and Russian Holiday, which hits stores in November.
